Moses: The Great Escape

Wednesday’s Story – Moses: The Great Escape

Moses and Aaron went to visit the king of Egypt. “God wants you to set his people free,” they announced, but the king just laughed.

“Don’t be silly,” he said, “they do what I tell them. They work for nothing. I will never set them free.”

“Then I must warn you,” said Moses, “God will make some very bad things happen until you change your mind.”

It started almost at once.

The rivers of Egypt turned red. The houses of Egypt swarmed with frogs. The dust of Egypt turned into gnats. The people were covered with flies. The animals in Egypt grew sick and ugly sores broke out on everyone. Hail pelted the land and broke down the crops. Locusts gobbled up what was left. Then darkness like night fell for three whole days.

The king would still not give in.

Moses gathered all the people together. “Listen,” he said, “tonight is special. God is going to free us from Egypt. We will remember this night for ever.”

Moses told them to prepare a special meal of meat and bread. Each family should eat standing up, because they would be leaving very soon.

“If you do this, you will show that you belong to God’s family. God will keep you safe. We will soon leave Egypt and go to a land of our own.”

That night God sent an angel through Egypt and finally the king said “Go! Go, and never come back!”
